We got to enjoy bites from more than 25 of Austin’s best restaurants, fine wines, and elegant cocktails with performances by Joshua Alderete & The Fellowship. ​

By the time we got into the live auction, that energy had turned into real bidding. Four different bidders went after the same Formula One package before it sold. The ranch weekend went fast, the way it always does at UMLAUF, because it’s become a crowd favorite there. A week at Lake Austin Spa moved just as quickly.

Then I put up a surprise item that wasn’t even in the catalog, a weekend at the new 1 Hotel in the Watermark tower, with the bidder so excited at getting her item.

But the moment I still think about happened a few packages later. A husband bid on a vintage diamond necklace, eight carats, nothing subtle about it, and won it as a surprise fortieth-anniversary gift for his wife. I got to wear it around the room for the rest of the night before he handed it over. That’s what a room like that can hold once the bidding really takes off. People aren’t just buying an item anymore. They’re buying a moment they get to give to someone else.

What to Look For in an Austin Charity Auctioneer

Experience with nonprofit audiences specifically. Charity auctions are different from commercial auctions. The psychology is different, the mission moment matters, and the donor relationships in the room are delicate. Make sure your auctioneer has done this before, many times over.
